A "Canadian Hero's" Welcome
"In the untimely loss of your noble son, our affliction here, is scarcely less than your own. So much of promised usefulness to one's country, and of bright hopes for one's self and friends, have rarely been so suddenly dashed, as in his fall."

Steve's Video Of The Day: "Hogging!"..., Wee Town Style!
"Fishing!" Just the thought of fishing stirs something inside a "red-blooded" North American male. A rod and a reel, a boat, a beautiful sky, pure, clean water, the call of the loon, and..... "Oh yeah!" a cooler full of "wobblies" and ice! Within a month and a half, the Manitoba/Ontario "fly-in fishing" scene will be in "full-swing". Can't wait. Time to "strap on" an Otter and head for the bush. Anyways, until then, check out my favourite fishing video from last year, although not from our area. I love these "good ole' boys"!
(By the way, this style of fishing is called "noodling"!)

"DOGFIGHTS"!
"Duke" Cunningham was one of the most highly decorated United States Navy pilots in the Vietnam War, receiving the Navy Cross once, the Silver Star twice, the Air Medal 15 times, and the Purple Heart for wounds he received under enemy fire. After military life, he eventually became a Congressman. Unfortunately, Cunningham is currently incarcerated at the United States Penitentiary at Tucson, in the minimum security satellite camp, for tax evasion, conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud, and wire fraud. His projected release date is June 4, 2013. He was one "helluva'" Naval Aviator, though!
"Duke" Cunningham and his RIO (radio intercept officer) Willie "Irish" Driscoll survived the SAM (surface to air missile) attack at the end of the video by "ejecting", and parachuting into the South China Sea. They were rescued by helicopter.

Steve's "Otter Of The Week"! .....by Karl E. Hayes
We have profiled Otters that operated in the Arctic, Antarctic, Australia, Iran, Vietnam, Canada, Alaska, Norway, and other places that have harsh environments or operating conditions. Suddenly, "Japan" popped into my "cranium". Japan, an "Island Nation". Certainly they must have had Otters!! "Sure did"! Meet;... "The Swallow"!

Otter 223
Otter 223 was delivered on 6th February 1958 to Toyo Menka Kaisha Ltd, DHC's Japanese agents on behalf of Nitto Aviation Company, registered JA-3115. It was packed into a crate and railroaded from Toronto to Vancouver and thence by ship to Tokyo and onwards to its base at Osaka, where it was re-assembled in May 1958. It received a traditional blessing from Shinto priests before entering service. Operated as an amphibian, named “Swallow”, it was the only Otter ever to grace the Japanese register.
On Wednesday 1st May 1963 it took off from the Osaka International Airport at 0811 hours on a scheduled flight to Tokushima on Shikoku Island, where it was estimating landing at 0855 hours at the Matsushige Air Base. On board were two pilots and nine passengers, eight Japanese and one visiting American businessman. Visibility was extremely poor in the area due to a rainy front hanging over western Japan. The Otter crashed into Mount Jusuke in the Yuzuruha Mountain Range on Awaji-Shima Island and burst into flames, killing all nine passengers and seriously injuring the two crew.
The pilot subsequently told reporters that visibility suddenly became zero around 0845 hours when the aircraft passed over Numajima Island, to the south of Awaji-Shima at an altitude of five hundred metres. He made his last contact over Sumoto at 0852. He was climbing to nine hundred metres when the Otter hit the mountain, scattering wreckage over a fifty metre section of bamboo thicket. The crash site was located by a Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Forces reconnaissance aircraft.

The one and only "Swallow" was unfortunately "swallowed" by the mountain, taking 9 "unfortunate souls" with her to her "doom". Check out my "1st" Google map!

"Loudmouth" Passenger "Cure"!
Did you ever notice that once you have boarded an aircraft, you always end up next to some "loudmouth" with "perpetual" lips? I do, anyways. Some irritating, annoying person that won't leave me alone and let me peer out the window at Earth's "majesty", alone with my "thoughts". Reminds me of the Gary Larson "Far Side" cartoon where a guy is sitting in an airplane before takeoff and complains about his seat. The caption reads, "Dang, why do I always have to sit next to some weirdo?" The guy is sitting next to a weird person, but some "Quasimodo" looking character has boarded the aircraft behind the guy and is about to sit in the last empty seat on the aircraft, which is, unfortunate for our "hero", on his other side. "Ha ha"! Anyways, I am flying to British Columbia next week, and I will take my "laptop" with me on the aircraft, as I plan on doing some work while enroute. "No problem", though, if I have to sit next to an "irritant". I am prepared, and here is my plan. I am sure it would quiet anyone............
1. Quietly and calmly open up my laptop case.
2. Remove my laptop.
3. Start it up.
4. Make sure the guy who is annoying me can see the screen.
5. Close my eyes, tilt my head up to the sky and move my lips as if praying.
6. Then, I... "HIT THIS LINK"!

I think it will work, what do you think?

Steve's Video Of The Day: "Battle at Kruger"!
This following video has nothing to do with "canoeing", "fishing", or "flying"! It certainly has "to do" with "hunting", although there isn't a man with a rifle chasing down a moose after being dropped off by an Otter on floats. It doesn't even take place in Canada, or even North America, as a matter of fact. It is, though, an "amazing portrayal" of nature, survival, community, and "strength in numbers"! "Then", throw in a "crocodile"!!!!! I just had to share this, the following is "unbelieveable", and the "outcome" is not what you would expect in relation to the beginning of the video!

From the the wondrous moment of a child's "placental arrival", the only guarantee the new life will have is death. Unfortunately, some children never make it out of childhood, and it is a traumatic event for all involved. Similarly, the fate of this following Otter, named "Kieta", was sealed merely two and a half years after her "Australian arrival".

Otter 253
Otter 253 was delivered to Qantas Empire Airways Ltd on 21st March 1958 registered VH-EAY. As explained in relation to Otter 241, this was one of four Otters delivered to the Australian national airline for services in the Territory of Papua New Guinea (PNG). The Otter was shipped to Australia, where it was re-assembled at Bankstown and joined the Qantas fleet in July 1958 named “Kieta”. It was one of three Otter landplanes based at Lae and operated services into the Highlands. It was not long in service with Qantas when, on 3rd August 1958, it suffered substantial damage in landing at Tapini. It ran off the airstrip and hit an open drain. It was repaired and returned to service.
With effect from 1st September 1960, the four Qantas Otters were taken over by Trans Australia Airlines (TAA), painted in TAA colours and re-registered. VH-EAY became VH-SBS with TAA but did not carry any name. It continued in service until destroyed in an accident on 2nd December 1961 at Togoba, near Mendi, Mount Hagen in the Whaggi Valley, sadly killing the two pilots. The Otter was on a charter flight at the time. According to the accident report “Substantial loss of engine power as the aircraft neared a ridge and in turning away towards lower ground, the Otter struck a tree, crashed inverted and burned”.

LAX "Traffic"!
Last summer I received an e-mail from Mark Syme, fellow Chemainus, B.C.'s "Daniel St./Holly Street" neighbourhood "alumnus", and in the e-mail was a link to a great tool to watch aircraft movements at "LAX". I never "investigated" the "tool" as thoroughly as I would have liked, as June is very busy, numerous 5 AM departures. Then it got "absorbed" into my e-mail files, and became "forlorn" amongst the hundreds of e-mails I receive daily. Well, I recently went looking for the e-mail, found it, and have been using the "tool". It is a "Live Airport Monitor". It is very interesting and entertaining, it sure is an "eye-opener" regarding aircraft movements, and "congestion" that can occur. My hat is off to the Air Traffic Controllers! I will let Mark explain some of the features of the "tool".....

Hi,
Interesting, you can watch the traffic-flow at LAX in real time.
LINK - http://www4.passur.com/lax.html
Let the page load completely - it could take a minute or 2 for the graphics to load.
The "Legend" at the bottom right corner explains the traffic.
If you use the functions to pan out to "80 miles" it gives a much better idea of the volumes involved.
And if you click on a specific aircraft it gives you some brief info.
Also, here's the link to other airports including JFK -

"Adios"!

Otter 387
Otter 387 was delivered to the RCAF on 31st August 1960 with serial 9412. It was assigned to 400 Squadron, Downsview and then to 411 Squadron, also based at Downsview in December 1960. It met with an accident on 19th January 1962 while landing at the Lake of Bays in the Muskoka Lakes area of Ontario. The mission was to land on the lake and set up camp as part of a survival training exercise. The pilot performed a touch-and-go on the snow covered ice of the lake, inspected the tracks for half a mile, and then landed at another parallel position. However, as the Otter taxied towards the shore, it encountered thin ice and sank, coming to rest with the wings resting on the ice and the fuselage full of water, which would later become ice when the temperature dropped. The crew made a rapid evacuation, without any injuries.
As it happened, there was a huge rescue effort on at the time, which had started on 16th January '62, for a Strategic Air Command B-47 bomber call-sign 'PETE 67', which had gone missing on a night training detail out of Plattsburgh AFB, New York. It was not known where the aircraft had crashed and although USAF aircraft were combing New York State, the RCAF were searching north of the border, a huge search involving Albatross, Dakota, Caribou, Expeditor and Lancaster aircraft and H-21 and H-34 helicopters, and also involving two Otters from 102 Rescue Flight at Trenton and one from St.Hubert. One of the SAR helicopters and a Caribou were diverted from the B-47 search to go to 9412's assistance. The B-47 wreckage was eventually found forty five miles south-west of Plattsburgh.
Otter 9412 was retrieved from the lake and taken to DHC at Downsview, where it was repaired by the RCAF's 12 Technical Support Unit (TSU). Following repair, on 30th October 1962 it was assigned to 401 Squadron at St.Hubert, Montreal. It was to spend the rest of its military career at St.Hubert, used by both 401 and 438 Squadrons. After nearly twenty years at St.Hubert, on 15th February 1982 it arrived at the AMDU, Trenton, moving on 27th May 1982 to the Mountain View depot where it was put up for disposal through the Crown Assets Disposal Corporation. It was one of a number of Otters sold at auction in September '82, advertised for sale with a total airframe time of 6,333 hours on the airframe. The purchaser was Silver Pine Air Services Ltd of Pine Falls, Manitoba at a price of $60,000. It was flown to Silver Falls and after overhaul and conversion to civilian configuration was registered C-GIIQ to Silver Pine Air Services in December 1982.
In July 1986 the Otter was sold to Jackson Air Services Ltd of Flin Flon, Manitoba. On 16th December 1987, at its Flin Flon base, the Otter sank through the ice while taxying for take off, the second dunking of its career. Repairs on this occasion cost $12,000. Another incident was recorded on 24th January 1990 at Sylvia Lake, Manitoba. The pilot landed too close to the shoreline and the aircraft ran up onto land, causing minor damage to the left wing. A more serious accident befell C-GIIQ at Sandy Bay, Saskatchewan on 11th March 1994. The Otter was departing from the ice strip at Sandy Bay. Because of the sticky snow conditions, the pilot taxied the aircraft beyond the normal take-off start position before starting the take-off run. However, the take-off run required was still too long to permit clearance over rising terrain in the departure path, and the aircraft struck the trees and crashed. The Otter decelerated in the trees and remained upright. The pilot and two passengers escaped without injury.
Damage to the Otter was very substantial however and brought the aircraft's career with Jackson Air Services to an end. The wreck was brought to Kuby's Aircraft at Kenora, Ontario where it lay for years. It was noted there still in May 2004, ten years after the accident.
*** LATEST UPDATE!***
Otter 387
January 1st, 2008. C-GIIQ. After its accident in March 1994 at Sandy Bay, Saskatchewan the Otter was brought to Kuby’s Aircraft, Kenora where it lay, in the company of other wrecked Otters, for years, intended for eventual rebuild. In the event, Kuby’s Aircraft sold their stock of wrecked Otters to Recon Air of Geraldton, Ontario and four Otters including C-GIIQ were trucked to Geraldton in October 2005. Rebuilding commenced during 2006 and IIQ was advertised for sale in November 2006, with total airframe time of 12,845 hours, in the course of rebuild to “like new” status, with a change of engine.
The buyer of the Otter, in March 2007, was Charles Bethel of Andros Island in the Bahamas where he runs the Flamingo Quay resort. He needed a replacement for his original Otter N335AK (263) which had crashed in December 2006. By the end of September 2007, IIQ was nearing the completion of its rebuild and had been converted to a Texas turbine Otter with the Garrett engine. It also had new avionics fitted, a new interior, new paint scheme and was on Wipline amphibious floats. It was registered N443CB on 12th October 2007 to Bank of Utah Trustee, Salt Lake City and set off on its delivery flight, routing from Geraldton- Duluth- Champaige (Illinois)- La Grange (Georgia)- Fort Lauderdale- Nassau- Flamingo Quay, a flight time of 26 hours. It then entered service supporting the Flamingo Quay resort, collecting its guests at Nassau and flying them to and from the resort.

Through "Others' Eyes"........
Since I started "blogging" in December 2004 I have certainly met some interesting people through the Internet, and exchanged "information" with many. Some of the "info" I have been sent I have used on my Blogs, and some I have "filed" in my e-mail folders. I have meant to share some of the "filed" info on my Blog, but I sometimes find myself short of time. I have been going through some of the photos I have been sent, and most are outstanding. So, I figured I would start sharing some of the photos I have accumulated, along with mentioning who sent them to me. Please note that the person who sent me the photos is not always the photographer. I will give credit for the photos when it is known. Today we will start off with...........

*From A Tree Stand!*
Sent to me by good buddy Clive Pearce, following is a sequence of nature at work, wolves and moose, hunters and hunted. Very graphic, but absolute "survival necessity". I am sure the photographer in the "tree stand" had "rushing adrenaline"!
Thanks, Clive!

*Whiteout!*
Sent to me by good friends Jonathan and Tanya Friesen, following is a sequence of photos from the movie "Whiteout!" The scenes were shot on Lake Manitoba last winter, and the two Otters are C-GBTU and C-FIOF, both Walter Turbine Otters. Jonny was the pilot of one of the Otters.

*St. Andrews Fire!*
Sent to me by my #2 daughter Kody. I was flying the sched out of St. Andrews last spring, and I actually saw this aircraft taxiing the day it burnt. I left to do a "sched", and when I got back, the aircraft was a "pile of ashes". My daughter managed to "find" the photos.
Amazing photos! "Thanks", Kody, Clive, Jonny and Tanya! Stay tuned! "More" to come..............!
"Adios"!

Steve's Video Of The Day: Gyro "Gearloose"!
Remember the old "Scrooge McDuck" comic series? The old "Beagle Boys", 176-167, 176-671, and 176-761 were always out to rob "Unca" Scrooge's vault, but were usually foiled by Huey, Dewey, and Louie, sometimes with help from their "inventor" pal "Gyro Gearloose"! I seem to remember "Gyro" had one of these "contraptions" in his hat!

***BONUS!***
Wednesday evening, March 5th! Not one "cockpit" guess yet! A first! Anyways, I have just finished watching the "incomparable" James Taylor on Detroit Public TV, and now Johnny Cash is on with Charley Pride, George Jones, and Marty Robbins. Johnny just stated he wrote "Don't Take Your Guns To Town", and when Marty Robbins heard it he said; "Cash, I am going to write a better song". Marty's song was "El Paso"! Hear them both! If you don't know the "cockpit", "rate the songs"! Leave a "comment"!

***MYSTERY UNSOLVED!***
This is the cockpit of the JDT "Mini-Max" 1600R. Two semi loads of "sailboat fuel" up for grabs next week! Oh yeah, Marty Robbins is good, and "El Paso" is great, but "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" by Jonny Cash is as "raw as can be" and wins "hands-down"!

"Floating" Across Canada: Ruud Leeuw's "Bushplanes at Fort Frances, Ontario!"
Ruud was once again heading west, his "pack mule" in tow "laden" with his possessions. He had heard "whispers on the wind" regarding the first European settlement west of the great "Gitchee Gumee". The name Gitchee Gumee has been derived from the Algonquin native language, specifically "Ke-che-gum-me". Gitchee means "all powerful" and Gumee means "lake". Lake Superior was known by the native people as the "All Powerful Lake". Anyways, Ruud found the settlement, present day Fort Frances, and found Lakeland Aviation and numerous Otters as a "bonus"!
