"De Havilland Heron DH-114-2"!

Clive Pearce sent me some info regarding an aircraft his brother Glen from Pearce Aero was interested in a few years back. It is in regards to a De Havilland "Heron" for sale. This interested me, because the De Havilland Heron was the airframe for the "Saunders ST-27" conversion. The Saunders ST-27 was a De Havilland Heron converted by Saunders Aircraft of Gimli, Manitoba, in the 1970s. Modifications to the aircraft included lengthening the fuselage and replacing the Heron's four Gypsy piston engines with two Pratt and Whitney turbines. The aircraft had (2) 770 HP Pratt & Whitney PT-6 turboprop engines with a cruising speed of 211 mph and a maximum range of 986 miles. The Saunders ST-27 is 58' 10" long and has a wingspan of 71' 6". Only 14 were ever produced, as financial backing dried up. Read about it in my Post "Hockey And Airplanes", Steve's Idea Of A Saturday Well-Spent!

Anyways, check out what Clive sent me!

Thank you for your inquiry concerning the DH-114 Heron we have for sale. I have listed the relevant details below and attached a specification sheet for the aircraft.

I have put a number of statements that you probably would like to know about the aircraft.

1. Take off performance is indicated below. If you operate the Gypsy aircraft at 12,499lbs single pilot the take off performance at this weight at ISA +15 is around 2,500ft based upon transport category conditions ie 1.67 ( take off roll is 1500ft)

2. Aircraft was designed for minimum support operations in remote areas, hence grass runways present no problems at all.

3. Aircraft is eligible for full airline transport Part 121 certification. We would recommend you have the aircraft placed on the register as a DH-114-2X variety. This allows single pilot operation. This is based on US requirements. The British allow the aircraft to fly single pilot, and our approved flight manual states one pilot.

SPARE PARTS
The spares available are considerable. They fall into four main categories;
1. Engine spares - Applicable to VH-NJP gypsy engine 2000 line items. This is everything from new crankshafts, camshafts through to pistons. There is enough here to build from scratch some 40 engines.
2. Airframe spares - 4000 line items. Everything from wheels/ brakes/ hose structural brackets etc
3. Rotable/seals - 1000 line items. This covers all aspects of the aircraft’s operating systems. Flaps, brakes, undercarriage etc.
4. General spares - this covers the large items such as whole under carriage sections, cowls, doors, ailerons, flaps tyres etc. All of this are uncatalogued. An indication is with the list shown for the Gypsy aircraft.

MAINTENANCE
The aircraft are on Australia’s equivalent of a part 121 certificate - low capacity airline. It is maintained to a high standard and come complete with a full record of their history. Each aircraft comes with a component card system (OSIP). The actual maintenance system is based upon 150/300/1200 & 2400 hour checks plus a series of TNS (service bulletins). The actual airframe is simple and easy to get at all sections. With respect to the Gypsy engines they are normally aspirated, carburettor type that are reliable and easy to maintain. We work on 50/70 man hours for each 150hrly. A 300hrly is 10 man hours extra due to retraction tests.
DOCUMENTATION
The aircraft will need an export C of A’s to leave Australia – the equivalent of a 150hrly.
TRAINING
We can make available our training captain to endorse one of your crew. This would be at your cost.
ENGINEERING
We can supply an engineer to accompany the aircraft for the ferry flight and then remain in the US for a short period to assist your staff with the introduction. This again would be at your cost.
FERRYING
Our training captain would be available to ferry the aircraft at your cost. .

"Adios"!
