Red Bull Air Race World Series: The Fourth Dimension Of Flight

On May 6, 2005, I made a "Post" entitled Steve's Video Of The Day: "Peter" Flies Low! It was my first exposure to Peter Besenyei. Peter is a Hungarian, and his specialty is freestyle aerobatics. In 2001 Red Bull approached Peter Besenyei with an idea to combine racing, obstacles, and precision flying into an event. Peter refined the idea, and today we have Red Bull Air Racing. Peter recalls how it began; "Red Bull approached me with the idea of organizing an airplane race against the clock, a type of slalom race in the air."

"I too had been thinking of a way to make aerobatic flying even more interesting for the public and when they described their idea to me, it sounded exactly like what I had in mind."

"We began developing air-filled columns using a special material and putting together the rules for this new sport. At the same time I spoke with other pilots and told them about the Red Bull idea. I didn't have to say much to convince them, they were immediately enthusiastic."

I personally followed the Red Bull World Series closely last year, and my initial "Post" about the series was entitled Peter Besenyei and Red Bull Air Racing. Well, the 2006 races were supposed to start today, but the first race has now been postponed until Saturday, due to "treacherous" winds, in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The following races this year will be held in Spain, Germany, Turkey, Hungary, UK, USA, and Australia. Last year's race in Budapest, Hungary, attracted 1.2 million spectators. Yes, you read it correctly. 1.2 "MILLION" spectators. The Red Bull Air Race World Series is an amazing spectacle, and well worth your time.
