Steve's Video Of The Day: "Merle's Social Commentary"...........
"Freedom of Speech" is one of the cornerstones of "true democracy". The ability for people with different and dissenting opinions to speak and help sculpt policy that is geared towards the greater good for all is essential. This is one of the reasons our great Veterans fought and died.
Some of my favourite "social commentators" are singer/songwriters who have been shaped by their early experiences in life. Singers like Woody Guthrie, his son Arlo, the incomparable Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, and that great "American working man's poet", Merle Haggard. From the oil fields to San Quentin Prison, Merle's experiences built inside of him for a number of years, until they could be released by pen. His "social commentaries" like "Okie From Muskogee", "Fightin' Side Of Me", and "I Wish A Buck Was Still Silver" are without peer. Since those early days, his experiences have continued to shape him, and his writing continues to this day. Whether or not you share Merle's views isn't the point. The songs makes everyone stop and think, and a "little soul-searching" never harmed anyone.
